About Tarsus
Tarsus is the easternmost district of Mersin; it borders Adana to the east, the central districts of Mersin to the west, and Pozantı and Çamlıyayla to the north. Built on the alluvial plain of the Berdan (Tarsus) River, the district has fertile lowlands in the south and the Taurus Mountains in the north. Agriculture and industry both play a part in its economy: early vegetables, fruit and cotton grow on the plain, and industry, led by textiles and including food and metalworking, is well developed. Settlement here goes back to the Neolithic Age; the city, which sits at the crossroads of the historic routes linking Cilicia to Central Anatolia, appears in Hittite texts under the name "Tarsha".
Gözlükule Mound in the city centre preserves traces of settlement that began in the Neolithic period. Among the main sights are the Roman-era bath ruin known as Altından Geçme, the Old Mosque converted from a church, and St. Paul's Well in the courtyard regarded as the site of the apostle's house; Paul was born in Tarsus. Of the city walls, only Cleopatra's Gate survives today. The Tarsus Waterfall on the Berdan River, the Byzantine-era Justinian (Bac) Bridge and the Tarsus Museum are also notable places in the district.
Tarsus district consists of 179 neighborhoods and had a population of about 346,715 as of 2020.
