About Mezitli
Mezitli is one of Mersin's four central districts, stretching along the Mediterranean coast to the west of the city; it became a district in 2008. Erdemli lies to its west, Yenişehir to its east and Toroslar to its north. About three quarters of its land is mountain, plateau and rolling terrain, and the coastal strip between the mountains and the sea narrows toward the west. Because the Taurus range shields the area from northerly winds, the district has a typical Mediterranean climate. It is a modern coastal district that is well developed in terms of tourism.
The district's most important historic site is the ancient city of Soli Pompeiopolis, about 11 km west of Mersin. Ancient sources describe Soli as a colony of Rhodes-Lindos; after Pompey's reorganisation in 67 BC the city took the name Pompeiopolis. Today 33 columns still stand along its Colonnaded Street, and the remains include the Soli Mound, roughly 22 m high, and an ancient harbour formed by two breakwaters.
