About Akdeniz
Akdeniz is one of the four central districts of Mersin and forms the historic core of the city. It was created in 2008 when the central district was divided into four; Toroslar lies to the north, Tarsus to the east and Yenişehir to the west, and the sea borders it to the south. Its economy rests on the port, logistics, industry, trade and services; the Port of Mersin and the Mersin Free Zone, which began operating in 1987 as Turkey's first free zone, are both located here. The port serves as the foreign-trade gateway of Central and Southeastern Anatolia and is also linked by rail; a railway terminal for container transport stands within the port area.
The historic buildings of the city centre include Atatürk House, the Latin Catholic and Arab Orthodox churches, the Historic Governorate Building, the Mustafa Erim City History Museum and the Historic Train Station. Atatürk Park and the Metropolitan Congress Centre are also within the district. The Kazanlı and Adanalıoğlu beaches and the Caretta caretta sea turtles are listed among its natural assets.
