About Gülnar
Gülnar is a district in the Taşeli region of the Taurus Mountains, set on the Taşeli Plateau; the district centre lies about 950 m above sea level, and the district also reaches the Mediterranean coast in the south. Silifke lies to its east, Mut to its north and Aydıncık to its south. It officially became a district on 3 June 1916; before that, the site of today's district centre was a village, also known as Anaypazarı, where the Yörük (nomadic) people traded. Forests cover most of the land; in farming, cereals come first, and pulses, fruit and vegetables are also grown. In the villages, carpets, kilims, rough cloths and saddlebags are woven on looms known as ıstar and çulhalık.
Meydancık Castle (Kirsu) lies 10–12 km from the district centre in the Emirhacı neighbourhood; this settlement of Rough Cilicia, used as a royal city in the 7th and 6th centuries BC, is known for its monumental entrance gate and tombs. The district's most important stream is the Sipahili River; streams that feed into the Göksu River, such as the Erik, the Ermenek and the Gözsüzce, also flow through its territory. Köseçobanlı Mountain (1,668 m) is among the district's highest points. Highlands and natural beauty are listed among the district's main tourism assets.
