About Aydıncık
Aydıncık is a small coastal district in the western part of Mersin, squeezed between the mountains and the sea; Silifke lies to its east, Bozyazı to its west and Gülnar to its north. The town centre was built on a narrow strip along the coast, on the branches of the Central Taurus that run down to the Mediterranean. The settlement, known in antiquity as Kelenderis, became an important harbour town because it lay in the region closest to Cyprus. Aydıncık was for a time the centre of Gülnar; in 1987 it separated from Gülnar and became a district in its own right. The economy depends largely on agriculture, and greenhouse farming, cucumbers in particular, holds an important place.
From Kelenderis, the Harbour Castle (Gilindire Castle), the Roman Bath, the theatre and the 8-metre-high Dörtayak Monumental Tomb, believed to date from the 2nd century AD, have survived. Around Sancak Cape on the coast are caves where Mediterranean monk seals live, and four small islands: Yelkenliada, Küçükada, Büyükada and Yılanlıada; Yılanlıada is a first-degree archaeological site. The town centre has a marina harbour that shelters private yachts and fishing boats. Gilindire Cave, found in 2000 and containing a lake at sea level, is also among the area's natural assets.
Aydıncık district consists of 15 neighborhoods and had a population of about 11,088 as of 2018.
