About Erdemli
Erdemli lies about 35 km west of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast, along the Mersin–Silifke highway; the province of Karaman is to its north. The district centre became a district in 1954 through the merger of two neighbouring villages. Its economy is based on agriculture, livestock and tourism; it is the district where the most early-season vegetables and citrus fruit, especially lemons, are grown in Mersin, with early vegetables cultivated in greenhouses. The Alata Horticultural Research Institute in the centre is known for its agricultural work. A marina harbour lies in the Kumkuyu neighbourhood.
The district has a rich belt of archaeological sites. In the Kızkalesi neighbourhood stand the remains of the ancient city of Korykos and a sea castle built in the 12th century on a small islet close to the shore. Ancient sites such as Elaiussa Sebaste (Ayaş), Kanytelleis-Kanlıdivane, Öküzlü, Çatıören and Akkale in Tırtar are also within Erdemli's borders. The canyons of streams such as the Lamas River, the Sorgun Stream and the Karakız Stream are considered suitable for rafting, trekking and other outdoor sports.
