About Anamur
Anamur is the westernmost district of Mersin; it borders Gazipaşa in Antalya Province to the west and Bozyazı to the east. Because branches of the Central Taurus running down to the Mediterranean cross its land, the terrain is rugged and mountainous, and about 60 percent of its area is forest. Anamur bananas are a product known across the country; they are grown mainly in greenhouses, and strawberries are also among the district's important crops. The name comes from the meaning of its ancient name Anemurium, "windy cape". Anamur became a district in 1869.
The ancient city of Anemurium and Mamure Castle are the district's main historic sites; Mamure Castle has been on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List since 2012. The ancient city of Titiopolis, Ala Bridge, Köşekbükü Cave and the Anamur Museum are also among the places to see. The beaches along the coast, which include İskele, Kale, Melleç and Ören, are nesting grounds of Caretta caretta sea turtles. In summer, part of the local population moves up to highland villages in the Taurus, such as Abanoz.
