About Mut
Mut is an inland district at the foot of the Taurus Mountains, on the banks of the Göksu River and on the Mersin–Karaman highway (D-715). The district centre lies at an elevation of 250–300 m; Silifke is to its east, Karaman to its north and Gülnar to its south. Because it combines features of the Mediterranean and continental climates, it has a wide variety of vegetables and fruit. The economy is based on agriculture and livestock; the most important products are olives and table apricots, and both Mut apricots and Mut olive oil hold geographical indication registrations. In Roman times the town was called Claudiopolis.
Mut Castle in the town shows the character of the Karamanid period; the La'al Pasha Mosque and the Kızılminare were also built in that period. About 20 km north of Mut, near the village of Geçimli, on a slope overlooking the Göksu Valley, stands Alahan Monastery, thought to have been built in the 5th century; it has been nominated for the World Heritage List. The Kozlar and Sertavul highlands and the Çınaraltı and Karaekşi nature and picnic areas are also in the district. There is a statue of Karacaoğlan in the district, and the Apricot (Karacaoğlan) Festival is held.
