About Silifke

Silifke is a large district in the west of Mersin, set between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean on both banks of the Göksu River; it lies at a junction of the highway network linking the Mediterranean coast with Central Anatolia. After the War of Independence it was the capital of İçel Province from 1924 to 1933. The delta where the Göksu meets the sea is an important wetland on a bird migration route and is listed under the Ramsar Convention. Greenhouse farming is widespread on the Silifke Plain: tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries are grown alongside citrus fruit and olives, and livestock breeding and freshwater and sea fish farms are also part of the economy.

The town centre has Silifke Castle, the Roman-period Taşköprü bridge, the remains of a Roman temple and the Tekirambarı cistern. In the surroundings are the ancient city of Uzuncaburç (Diocaesarea), the Cennet and Cehennem sinkholes, the Aya Tekla underground church at Meryemlik, and coastal settlements such as Narlıkuyu and Taşucu. Taşucu is an important gateway for passenger traffic between Turkey and Northern Cyprus; regular sea services run from Taşucu Port to Kyrenia Port.

Silifke district consists of 89 neighborhoods and had a population of about 119,303 as of 2018.
